    When you visit Colonial Williamsburg at Christmastime, you see beautiful decorations made with fresh fruit and foliage adorning the historical buildings.  The base of the wreaths are formed with evergreens and topped with all sorts of fruits, nuts, dried flowers, and berries.

     

    Add a historical touch to your Christmas decorations by making your own Williamsburg wreath:

    • Take a pre-made wreath made of evergreens and using florist wire, place 9 to 11 pieces of fruit around the wreath.
      • The florist wire should be about 10-12 inches long.
      • Stick the florist wire through the center of the fruit and tie the wire around the wreath to secure the fruit firmly to the wreath.
      • It’s helpful to lay the pieces of fruit on the wreath prior to wiring them so you have a better idea what it will look like.
    • Next take some nuts and hot glue them to the wreath
      • Place a little hot glue on the wreath, stick the nut on the hot glue and firmly press the nut into the hot glue for 20-30 seconds.
    • If you want your wreath to look larger, nestle magnolia leaves around the edge of the wreath and then hot glue them to the wreath.
      • It’s best to put the hot glue on the leaf and then press it firmly against the wreath for 20-30 seconds.
      • Cut the magnolia leaves in half if they are too large.

     

    Your Williamsburg wreath will last outside for at least 3-4 weeks if the wreath is cold.

    Don’t be afraid to get creative. Williamsburg decorations often reflect the homeowners taste and interests or are customized for a particular location. For example you might find balls of cotton on the milliner’s shop, the baker might have cinnamon sticks. Utilize natures bounty gather what you have around you.

    Add items from your kitchen and gardens.

    Fresh From the Kitchen:

    Fruit: Apples, Oranges, Lemons, Limes, Pomegranates, Pineapple (a symbol of hospitality).

    Fom the garden:

    Evergreens: Pine, Cypress, Fir, Hemlock, Boxwood, Magnolia

    Berries: Holly, Nandina, Cotoneaster, Pyracantha

    Herbs: Rosemary, Sage

    Dried materials: yarrow, cockscomb, orange slices, okra pods, cotton, red pepper pods

    Nuts: Unshelled Acorns, Pecans, Walnuts, Hazelnuts (filberts), Almonds, Hickory nuts, Chestnuts.
