Ground cover plants are a very versatile group. Steep slopes and densely shaded areas are locations suitable for ground covers. Some ground covers are excellent for preventing soil erosion; others are particularly useful in establishing formal and informal designs in residential and public landscapes. Plants in this category are usually more satisfactory than shrubs in narrow planters.

Carpet Bugle Ajuga reptans 'Chocolate Chip' Noted for its handsome foliage with leaf color ranging from dark green to purple to metallic bronze. Some have an upright growth habit, some spread along the ground. Flower colors are white, violet-blue or pink.	Type: Perennial Environment: Performs best in partial shade Plant Height: 4" to 12" in height Bloom Season: Spring into early Summer


Liriope Grass Liriope muscari 'Variegata' Forms tufts of grass-like blades and produces flower clusters in lilac or white. An excellent edging and border plant. The blades of Liriope grass are wider than Mondo blades. Plant both in well-draining soils.	Type: Perennial Environment: Prefers partial shade, but will tolerate full sun Plant Height: 12" to 18" in height Bloom Season: Summer months


Golden Creeping Jenny Lysimachia nummularia 'Aurea' Lime green to yellow foliage that will brighten any shady area with moist soil. It performs very well in wet areas near streams or ponds. Produces yellow blooms in early summer.	Type: Perennial Environment: Shady areas with moist to wet soil Plant Height: 4" to 8" in height Growing Pattern: Fast-spreading Bloom Season: Early summer


Mondo Grass Ophiopogon japonicus Forms tufts of grass-like blades and produces flower clusters in lilac or white. An excellent edging and border plant. The blades of Mondo grass are narrower than Liriope blades and requires well-draining soils.	Type: Perennial Environment: Prefers partial shade, but will tolerate full sun Plant Height: 4" to 18" in height Bloom Season: Summer months


Japanese Spurge Pachysandra terminalis 'Green Sheen' Compact, shrub-like plant is a cold-hardy and often grown in wooded areas. Clusters of green leaves sometimes mottled with purple, gray or brown. White flowers appear in late spring.	Type: Perennial Environment: Tolerates limited sunlight very well Plant Height: 6" to 12" in height


Stonecrop Sedum Varieties of this plant are very diverse. They are a robust group of evergreen plants with fleshy leaves. Many varieties are excellent additions to rock gardens and borders. Drought resistant.	Type: Evergreen Environment: Full Sun Plant Height: 2" to 24" in height, depending on variety


Variegated Common Periwinkle Vinca minor & Vinca major Great groundcovers on slopes. A good choice for erosion control. Grow vigorously when planted in partial shade and moist soil. They will tolerate full sun, but will need a lot of water to thrive. Soft lavender-blue flowers appear on the plants in the spring.
