April

  • FESCUE CARE: Feed Fescue Lawns with (Pike Signature Lawn Food) toward the end of the month. Set mower height to 2 to 3 inches for fescue grass.

  • WARM SEASON BEDDING PLANTS: Set out annuals, perennials and other bedding plants after April 15. Apply an application of a balanced, slow release fertilizer.

  • PLANTS FOR SPRING COLOR: Plant shrubs, such as rhododendrons, viburnums, azaleas and spiraea for spring color.

  • DEAD-HEAD EARLY SPRING BULBS: Remove faded flowers from daffodils, tulips and hyacinths, but leave the foliage and let it die back naturally.

  • WARM-SEASON GRASSES: Fertilize Bermuda and zoysia grasses with (Pike Signature Lawn Fertilizer) when grass is at least 50% green.

  • SUMMER BULBS: Begin setting out summer-flowering bulbs such as gladiola when soil temperatures reach 60 degrees or above.

  • CALADIUM BULBS: Plant caladium bulbs in pots, and begin designing summer container gardens after all danger of frost has passed. You can plant caladium bulbs in the ground when soil temperatures are 75 degrees or above.

  • FERTILIZE SPRING BLOOMING PLANTS: Fertilize azaleas, camellias and other spring flowering plants immediately after they finish blooming.

  • PRUNE SPRING BLOOMING PLANTS: After blooming, prune spring blooming shrubs like forsythia, azaleas and weigela, if needed.

  • CONTROL SNAILS and SLUGS: Be on the look out for pests such as slugs and snails, especially if we have a cool, wet spring.

  • WARM-SEASON VEGETABLES: After danger of frost, begin planting warm season vegetables, like tomatoes, peppers and others.
