February
- LOVE IS IN THE AIR: Don't forget your sweetheart on Valentine’s Day. Roses are always a favorite but blooming azaleas, hydrangeas, orchids and tulips are also beautiful.
- CRABGRASS PREVENTER: Around mid-February, apply the first application of crabgrass preventer (pre-emergent) to control grassy weeds in fescue, Bermuda and zoysia lawns. If you plan to sow fescue seed, do not apply a pre-emergent. It will prevent both the weed seeds and the grass seeds from germinating.
- PRUNING: Now is the time to prune roses, ornamental grasses and crape myrtles.
- DORMANT OIL SPRAY: Spray fruit trees and certain other trees with dormant oil for insect and disease control.
- PANSIES: Fertilize pansies with Super Bloom every 10 to 14 days. .
- PREPARE VEGETABLE BEDS: Apply lime, mushroom compost or composted manure as needed to vegetable beds.
- PRUNE CRAPE MYRTLES: Avoid “crape murder” by limiting pruning to limbs no larger than the circumference of your finger. Dead or diseased wood can be removed at any time.
- LIRIOPE: Cut back the dead leaves on liriope (monkey grass) before the new growth appears.
- BIRD FEEDING: Continue to feed the birds.
