June

  • Plant hydrangeas and crape myrtles now. They are blooming, so it is easy to see what color you are planting!

  • Water your lawn in the early morning. Turf will have time to dry off before nightfall, preventing disease.

  • Fertilize Bermuda and zoysia lawns.

  •  Continue planting Gladioli bulbs each week, through mid June, if you want a succession of blooms.

  • Plant herbs in a sunny spot close to your kitchen door.   Mint, rosemary, basil, stevia and lemongrass can be enjoyed all summer long.

  • Fertilize flower beds with Green Light Super Bloom.

  • Mid June is your last chance to plant bulbs such as cannas, dahlias, elephant ears and tuberoses.

  • In the vegetable garden pull spent plants, re-till the soil and plant your second crops. Water well as needed.

  • If the soil is excessively wet or dry, do not fertilize.

  • Prune arborvitaes, junipers, yews and hemlocks.

  • June is your last chance to fertilize camellias and other broadleaf evergreens.

  • Remove the foliage on your spring blooming bulbs when the leaves have completely died back.

  • Cut back bearded iris and divide. Keep Japanese iris watered.

  • Weed ‘em and reap! Pull weeds from planting areas as they occur. Don’t allow them to bloom or set seed. Removing a few weeds now will save you a lot of work later.

  • Watch for harmful insects and disease problems and treat the plants as necessary.

  • During dry weather, be sure to keep the garden adequately watered. A deep, thorough soaking is more beneficial than a light sprinkling.  Don't forget to comply with local watering restrictions, if applicable.

  • Add SoilMoist to the soil in pots. The granules absorb water and release it as needed.
