Full Sun Project
Growing tomatoes is easy and you'll be rewarded with juicy, flavorful tomatoes you can use on sandwiches, in salads, salsa and more. Visit your neighborhood Pike Nurseries and let us help you pick the perfect tomatoes for your garden.

Step 1: Find a sunny spot. Tomatoes need full sun (6-8 hours a day). If there's not an area in your garden that receives full sun, you can grow tomatoes in large containers that can accommodate their vigorous root system
Step 2: Plant in nutrient-rich soil. In the garden, amend dense clay soil with Pike Vegetable & Flower Mix to improve drainage, provide nutrients and balance soil pH for healthy vegetables. In containers, use Pike Potting & Container Soil, which provides a fertilizer to jump start root growth and also contains wetting agents that help retain moisture in the soil.
Step 3: Plant deeply. Remove the bottom 1 or 2 rows of leaves, then bury the stem up to where those leaves used to be. The covered stem will grow new roots for a stronger plant. Tomatoes are the only plant that you should plant this deeply
Step 4: Water & feed regularly. Water extremely well when planting. Then, maintain a consistent watering schedule so that the soil stays slightly moist to the touch. Irregular watering can cause the fruit to split. Use Dr. Earth's Organic Tomato & Vegetable & Herb Fertilizer to fertilize every 6 weeks.
