Underplanting Bulbs

Bulb Lasagna - But Don't Eat It

How to Underplant Bulbs

What is the world is "bulb lasagna"??? It's the concept of layering bulbs in the soil under your currently blooming flowers. Sounds easy enough, but there are a few things to keep in mind.

Timing is Key
Spring-blooming bulbs like tulips, daffodils and hyacinths should be planted in the fall. You can layer them in the soil under ornamental cabbage and kale, as well as pansies and violas which will bloom all through winter in our region. Then in early spring, you have a one-two punch of color as your bulbs start to emerge among your still-blooming pansies. Summer-blooming bulbs like alliums, crocus, and dahlias should be planted in spring.

Control the Depth
The tallest-growing bulbs should be planted the deepest, while the shortest bulbs should go closer to the surface. Always refer to the packaging for your specific bulbs' preferred depth.

Ground or Pots?
Is bulb underplanting meant for flower beds or containers? Why not both? Fill your pots, beds and even window boxes with bulbs!
